Twitter and domains

Since I have been running 3ac.co.uk I have been on Twitter meandering my way through the social media swamp on 140 character messages. So many domainers have set up accounts for there domains, me included, but is it even worth it?

What value does Twitter add to your domain business. Are you attempting some sort of SEO strategy where people may link to your domain if they see it on Twitter. Or do you just want exposure to potential customers who may visit your domain and click or buy a product that your affiliated to?

Is it all just a waste of time?

The other day I went to see a friend who has a substantial Twitter following and what was he doing? Unfollowing people and blocking people…why? Because analytics showed that Twitter actually referred very few people to his sites, let alone was responsible for any conversions.

I no longer register a Twitter account for any domain or mini-site I own. It’s too much effort for little return. However I love my own Twitter account and as far as domains are concerned I have made a lot of head way in the domaining industry purely through my Twitter account.

If you are new to domaining, I would definitely recommend you set up a Twitter account for your domain name projects, but only one account. Your own personal account, you, yourself. This way people are more inclined to be responsive to your tweets rather than seeing some landing page or mini-site tweet “reviews” of products or half arsed sales pitches which they are more likely going to block than follow back.

In short, don’t waste your time, if you build up a good reputation on Twitter and then post something about a new site / domain you have developed you will reap the rewards more sweetly than any other way.
