Top ten domain name sales

It’s time to bring back my weekly “Top 10 Domain Name Sales” Report! I had lots of interest in the series of posts I did last year and so I thought it was about time to bring it back into place especially with domains recently changing hands for seven figures. I feel it’s going to be a good summer of lucrative domain names sales and I’ll be here to report on them in my own unique way. For those of you who had not seen my posts last year here they are.

So what’s been going on year to date?

In summary, the first five months have actually been quite busy considering the global markets with many domains being bought and sold for various prices.

So here’s the breakdown of the top ten (correct as of last week)

  • Photo.com – SOLD for $1,250,000 through Moniker – 05/05/2010
  • Flying.com – SOLD for $1,100,000 as a private sale -07/04/2010
  • Poker.org – SOLD for $1,000,000 through Sedo – 23/02/2010
  • Credit.fr – SOLD for $852,000 through Sedo – 12/01/2010
  • Guns.com – SOLD for $800,000 through Moniker – 10/03/2010
  • Files.com – SOLD for $725,000 through Sedo – 31/03/2010
  • LongIsland.com – SOLD for $370,000 as a private sale – 07/04/2010
  • PartySupplies.com – SOLD for $360,000 through Moniker – 20/01/2010
  • ScreenSavers.com – SOLD for $335,000 through Moniker/SnapNames – 24/03/2010
  • Software.de – SOLD for $303,182 through Sedo – 04/05/2010

As you can see these domains have made some people very rich already this year…if they weren’t already. Rick Schwartz recently wrote a post about creating a league table for domainers earnings across the globe – Domainers and Lifetime Earnings and with sales like these clocking up on a regular basis there will probably be a lot of movers and shakers on the list.

It’s a shame there have been many people opposed to a league table for domainers. Most of them citing reasons like “I don’t want people to know what I’m earning” or “I don’t want the tax man to know what I’m earning”….BULLSHIT.

If you don’t want people to know what you have earned it’s most likely for two reasons…

1.) You haven’t earned much and you are embarrassed…which you should never be because everyone has to start somewhere and even the top people in the industry may not even be top in any one month or year…

2.) You haven’t been declaring your sales to the tax man/IRS in which case you are simply just criminal scum. There is a huge difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion…

Anyway moving swiftly on before I fall of my soap box. I used to pick apart the top ten domain name sales after listing them by whether or not they had been developed and if not why not; usually throwing in my own opinion of what use would suit the domain best.

So let’s have a look at the domains again:

As you can see there is an interesting mix of developed and parked domains with development getting the overall majority. A stark contrast to where the market was 10 years ago. It is great to see people realising the full potential of their domains and using them for development purposes to maximise their return on investment.

So that concludes this week Top Ten Domain Name Sales post. It has been brief but at the moment I am waiting for my new graphic design work for 3ac.co.uk to be finished and then I can really go to town on the posts.
