Top 10 domain name sales WE 8th March 2009

Top ten domain name sales

And so another week has flown by and I find myself writing my 3rd Top 10 domain name sales weekly post. With reference to last week, I have decided to divert off the usual route seen by most domain name sites when reporting on weekly domain name sales and gather a top 10 list that is not just about how much domain names are being sold for but (and hopefully you will agree with me here) the industry trends that are sculpting the domain name aftermarket. These week has a nice selection on reported domains that have sold over the last seven days, I have even jazzed my list up too for your viewing pleasure too!

In at position numero uno this week is the German country code TLD, FlatRate.de. Sold for a tidy $200,000 through Sedo.com, it is the highest reported ccTLD sold this year. Currently not developed, it will be interesting to see what becomes of this domain and how the new owners intend to monetize it.

Sliding in to second place a nice one-word generic dotcom. Claim.com sold through Afternic DLS for a cool $80,000. A funky little logo dons the site at the moment, with “launch in progress” in the title bar, will it become a portal for a big insurance player, watch this space. Sold back in May 2006 for $62,620 this domain name has bagged a 28% profit for the previous owner, demonstrating that generic dotcoms can be recession beating investments.

Taking 3rd place by storm is an interesting one. RodeoDrive.com was snapped up for sixty big ones! The domain is developed and has a nice peppered of adsense across the site. Quoted as “one of the world’s most exclusive extravaganzas of shopping and star-studded sightseeing…” and with an average search volume of 60,500 the term “rodeo drive” should certainly recoup the $60k price tag paid by the new owner.

FreeCreditReports.net, has sneaked in at 4th place. Always a favourite of mine credit reports are a great product to market with decent conversion rates and a healthy market place to aim at, considering people are very credit conscious at present. At the moment the site is laden with sponsored links, however it would be nice to see this turned into a information site for people looking to stay up to date with their credit profile and having it monetized by subscribing to a credit report company affiliate program like Equifax or Experian. Either way this is another great example of how generic, keyword rich domain names are still commanding significant sales.

Moving on to number 5 in this weeks top 10 domain names sales chart is Kefalonia.co.uk. An interesting one here as it is the only private sale to feature this week. The proud new owner of this domain has paid a tidy four figure sum for but out of duty I have chosen to keep the exact amount paid as undisclosed. In an email to me last week the buyer seemed pleased with his purchase stating “I now have my own island!” Beautiful. And its always great to see a .co.uk in the top ten. The domain is developed, again with a nice sprinkling of sponsored links and like the finance industry the travel/holiday market is remains bouyant so hopefully this purchase will bring great rewards.

Domain names sales six through to ten I have hand picked especially to show the strength of “the vices” within the domain name industry. Dating, gambling and porn all seem to be bullet proof industries at the moment, faltering very little amidst the global recession and always achieving constant results.

So that about sums it up for this weeks top 10 domain name sales I hope you have enjoyed my review. Stay tuned for next weeks slot for more interesting insight into the domain name industry.
