Selling domains on social networks 30th March 2009

selling-domains-on-social-networks-30th-marchMy my, its amazing how time flies, another week gone by, so its that magic time again where I can lift your Monday morning spirits with my 4th weekly experimental post about selling domains on social networks. In this weeks edition I look at the top 20 domains I have parked with Sedo from a collection of 74, spanning finance, retail, gaming and other industries. I then dissect the results with how well they have been marketed on the social networks of Twitter and Mixx, showing you an insight into my analytics pages.

So to start off with lets have a look at the top 20 domains names from this weeks experiment and what type of activity they have seen.

A pretty decent week in terms of activity this week, although not as strong as the first week when we saw numbers into the two hundreds.

Whitelabelpoker.com has come up trumps again with 101 views to offer. This has always been a strong domain for me in this experiment. A nice brandable poker dot com, but also coveted for its “white label” status which would be an interesting affiliate program to explore should someone have the right amount of time, dedication and money to develop it further. There are plenty of exaples where white labelling works in the gaming industry and this could be a great domain as a poker affiliate network.

Its great to see positions two and three taken up by none dotcoms this week. In the form of forked.co.uk and offline.biz. I like forked as the term “fork” is an old expression used in relation to free or open source software. I like the idea of forked.co.uk being used as a forum site for sharing cool open source software.

Offline.biz…well agreat word as far as generic one word, internet related words go…shame about the dot biz…I’m not a fan of them but when I saw it was available I thought I should grab it, it would have been rude not too! I still think it has certain potential to be developed, and would possibly suit some sort of SME type, IT company. Catchy and easilt brandable. Great potential for trfafic too as in the UK terms which contain the word “offline” are searched for over 165,000 times per month.

Moving on to another couple of gaming domains, always popular, are a pair I really like; SuperStarGaming.com and OnlineBingoClub.net. Both have excellent brand appeal but in particular with online bingo club, it is keyword rich. The demand for gaming related domains is strong at the moment, no doubt and with over 60 views to offer each, the proof is in the pudding.

Fixedpricedomains.co.uk has slid into 6th place this week on selling domains on social networks, always a strong competitor as offering a fixed price selling option in response to lengthy domain auctions would fire up the lower end of the domain name market and could be something worth exploring. Certainly sites like DNEX.com are already using the fixed price concept for selling domain names but only with high value dotcoms and dotnets.

Moving down to the pair that seem to maintain middle of the table rankings every week are the snappy little duo of mycomparisons.co.uk and mycomparison.co.uk. Both superb example of domains which could be used for price comparison sites or product comparisons within the UK market. A steal would be to snap up both and with views of offer numbers well into the double digits, I would say there is a healthy market for any type of comparison site.

The last domain I am going to mention from this weeks top 20 is blognow.co.uk, I don’t know about you but I’m alwasy surprised that this short .co.uk doesn’t get more views to offer. It leads itself up nicely to have some sort of blog/website about the reasons why you should blog. I think it could be used as a great marketing blog for someone in the UK. But it seems the figures simply don’t show it…shame, a nice domain which should go to an owner who will develop it into its true potential.

So, moving on from the table. Lets have a look at how Twitter and Mixx compared in terms of referring visitors. Are the domain getting the exposure they need from these two social networksa dn could I be doing anything better to market them. Lets take a look.

As you can see from the table above, Twitter has beaten Mixx this week with the number of referrals, however the results are massively skewed so I haven’t included visitor figures. Last week I feautured on Bido.com as a guest speaker for one of their domain name auctions. On the lead up to that they had sent out emails to their registered users, tweets on Twitter and a post on conceptualist.com. All these lead to a much larger increase in numbers ofr Twitter referrals to my selling domains on social networks posts. I also mentioned the post title during my interview on Bido, so now doubt that have an effect too. But more fuel to fire on why you should get involved with social neworks and how raising your own profile certainly does help with traffic. If you haven’t already, you may want to have a look at a post I wrote last week on Domain name seo, who’s sending visitors to your domains?

Well that about brings me to a close for this week, no domain name sales again from the 74 domains I am focusing on for the experiment, but I am optimistic we’ll have one go soon! Stay tuned to see how I get on over the next week selling domains on social networks. It will be very interesting seeing that I will be sunning myself in Portugal!

Ta taa for now!

    Hi There

Just wondering how you manage to put the google analytics code on a domain that’s parked with sedo?

    Cheers

    Hi John

Thanks for the comment, I only track the referrals to my blog posts themselves, to see the correlation between posting links on Twitter/Mixx and the visitors they then receive to the views for offer pages.

It isn’t possible to track the referring sites directly to a parked domain with Sedo. Unless anyone else knows otherwise? I did actually ask that question in last week’s post, http://www.3ac.co.uk/selling-domains-on-social-networks-23rd-march-2009.

However I have been monitoring single tweets on Twitter by including my Sedo affiliate id in the tiny url, this allows me to see how many people have clicked through onto my sedo landing pages. From the domain management section on my Sedo account I can then see how many times the views for offer page has been visited. Not a bullet proof solution by any means. But if there are any peaks and troughs in traffic they are apparent. And it was nice to see last week that mothersdaycards.co.uk came up top (with it being Mothers Day weekend in the UK) showing that people respond to things that are relevant to them at any given time.

    Thanks again

Thanks …I didn’t think you could put analytics on a sedo-parked domain.

I was looking at whitelabelpoker /co/uk rather than your .com site and evidently confused myself.
