Mobile seo and .mobi domains

Well happy new year everyone! I wish you all a great start to 2010. Whilst I’m sunning myself in beachside villa in Cape Town,  South Africa, I thought I would write a post or two about our progress with our mobile seo and .mobi domains project. The latest decision has been to scrap our main website, hosted on our .mobi domain and only have the mobile site hosted on it. We will change the web version to a .co.uk and continue focusing on the UK web search audience.

What we have found over the las 12 months is that Google is confused when a web site and mobile site are hosted on a .mobi and it doesn’t really know where it should be placing the site in the SERPs. We have had our web version on www. and the mobile site on m. so there should have been no real confusion however we have found that the website required an exponential amount of inbound links and content updates to rank in the web results than we believe a standard extention such as .co.uk would. The change will not be hard; 301 re-directs to the new .co.uk and we are away again.

As for the .mobi in mobile SERPs we are having great results, with clean meta and seo friendly URLs we are returning first page results for like for like keyword searches with our page titles. Meaning if we use a well searched key phrase as our title for a new piece of content that particular page ranks well very quickly. Linking then back to the home page of the mobile site, from the mobile content pages, the web version home page and the web version blog has meant we are getting longevity of placement in the search results for these new content pages.

I may have mentioned that we started a youtube.com channel for the site too and linked directly back to our mobile site which seems to be referring good traffic. 8,500 views per months, 10% of which are from mobile search. So there’s a tip for getting you some high converting traffic to your mobile site.

Anyway, I’m off to play my guitar by the pool and drink away the afternoon in a fashion only the hot sun, sea and cool breeze will allow. Beautiful!

Best
