Link building for mobile websites

Its been a while since my last post, a long while in fact. Its not that I haven’t wanted to write on 3ac but I haven’t found anything I wanted to talk about, until the last few weeks. In developing a mobile website of mine, I have been looking into link building for mobile websites, in particular for the .mobi domain, which you all should know by now I am a very big fan of. I have researched many of the link building tactics used by different industries, from adult, to finance to public services it varies so so much. However I believe I have come across a viable mobile link building concept which could be brandable and more importantly saleable.

Obviously I’m not just going to come out and say what it is but here are some of the ideas I explored before getting to the point I am at now…the testing phase.

If you have a .mobi domain or a mobile website hosted on any domain, you will know that to get it ranking in PC based can be tricky compared to a regular site. For a start you can’t have as much content on the screen at any one time or you will adversely affect the loading time of the site on mobile devices and in many regions cost your visitor more for download sizes. So you have to come to a happy medium of quick navigation, search engine optimised content and quality inbound links.

The key here is relevancy. From our research we have found that theĀ  placement in the mobile SERPs is quite fickle and is influenced particularly by inbound blog links. Yes blog links. It is almost as though Google is saying blogs are more important than standard websites as they tend to be a representation of a persons own opinions on something. Probably why Twitter accounts rank very well in mobile SERPs. (Check out a search for “Mobile SEO” and note the Twitter account in position 8… http://www.google.com/m/search?site=mobile&q=mobile+seo) Note: Mobile internet users don’t want to hang around searching for things, they want the most relevant result for their search query to be top of the list whilst being quick and easy to navigate. Because blogs tend to be updated more frequently with unique content than say a business website for example they may be considered more relevant. We have performed a number of test scenarios which proved to be successful.

Obviously we still want to focus on quality, I’m not saying go out and post comments about your mobile site on loads of blogs, what I am saying is find a way to get blogs to link to you with out you going to them. A calling.

Ask youself, why would people talk about my mobile site? What does it have to offer that others don’t, what are it’s USPs (Unique Selling Points) Who do I want to target? Work back from these to find the demographic of blogs which you believe have readers that match the visitors you want to visit your site.

Does you mobile site have its own blog? An external site linking back to your mobile site and linking to other useful sites. Do you have a mobile version of the blog which your visitors can subscribe to from their mobiles? Have you submitted this blog to blog directories? A great example of a mobile directory is the Oh! Mobile Directory
