Domains for mobile, a development update
I have been working with a couple of colleagues on some mobile development projects as of late and tomorrow (Tuesday 28th 2009) they are actually down at the Radisson in London, doing a presentation on Mobile SEO for the Bango Key Partners meeting. I wanted to shed a bit of light on one of the projects at hand which is a .com domain fully developed as a mobile site; taking advantage of the traffic which the mobile web has to offer. I think this is a great example of what domainers can acheive for their own .coms which are not yet developed and want to move into the mobile web as a way of monetising some of their domains.
Lets take the example of mobislim.com, a mobile site about slimming diets, treatments, products and health news, which people can subscribe to via their mobile. Any experienced online marketer will know that the healthy eating / diet industry is a highly competitive industry online, accounting for a large percentage of the global search market. What Mobislim are trying to achieve is maximise their exposure by appealing to the mobile market. For example the lady sitting on the bus on her way to work, the girls out at lunch with their friends. The people who are on the go and want the information at hand when required, something which traditional pc-based internet simply cannot cater for.
The way in which Mobislim have created their site is an extremely good example of what could potentially be acheived for a domainer looking to park a domain, pepper it with adsense and allowtake advantage of natural search engine rankings to earn some decent money. Take a look at the “Less food diet” for example:
http://mobislim.com/k-zfve/slimming-diets/article/3/the-less-food-diet.htm
A simple piece of advice about eating less food to lose weight, not particularly rocket science you may agree but the site is generating circa 350 page views per day, capitalising on the niche of people searching for diet tips and advice. With the help of Bango analytics it was possible to see that in the last 24hrs, just under 90% of the visitors came from mobile devices with the top device being the Blackberry 9900 with over 10% users coming from this device.
The beauty of turning your domains into mobile sites also means you can take advantage of in-depth analytics such as which mobile network in which region your users came from. For instance if you found that visitors from Ireland on the Vodafone mobile network were generating the best conversion rates for the keywords “slimming diets” you could purchase advertising space on the network to have your site served when visitors of that particular demographic are searching the web. Thus increasing revenue even further through improved conversion rates.
So do you have any domains which would be suitable for capitalising on the traffic which comes from the mobile web? Perhaps you have some cool investment or stock related domains or domains to do with cookery where people could donwload recipes straight to their mobile phone for example, a whole host of cool niches are out there which visitors can be monetised through either adsense, affiliate links or subscriptions.
What will your next mobile site be and what domain will you be using?
