Depending on who you talk to, the results achieved by posting comments on other websites differ dramatically. In this weeks edition of domain name SEO, I look at the effects of getting involve across the four corners of the internet and getting your voice out there.
I have found that many people are very cinical about posting comments on other websites. I’ve heard comments like, “whats the point if they don’t link back to you?” or “they no-follow all their links so it won’t help me” or even “I can’t be bothered…”
All of these comments are pretty poor excuses toward what I feel is a very important part of building your online reputation and percieved authority within your industry.
So what are the benefits of posting comments on other websites and in what ways can it help your domain name seo?
Well to start with, I feel it is important that when posting comments on other websites you do it in a selfness manner, yes I know the whole point it so you can ultimately benefit from it but don’t bee an a**hole about it. Write useful and informative posts which actually contribute & add value to the discussion at hand. Ok rant over, lets move on.
Firstly posting comments on other websites increases your online visibility, FACT. If you are not commenting on new items, other peoples artcles, appearing on social networks etc. then you simply won’t get heard. Make sure you are posting your comments on sites which are also relevant to your particular industry, there is not much point posting a comment on a cuddly toy website when your blog is about domains. Or is there?
Well it depends on how you look at it. I like to think that people are human and humans participate in conversation, so irrespective of the fact that your industries are not related if your comment is helpful and insightful, people will value it and more importantly value you! And how do you know that the owner of that cuddly toy website isn’t a closet domainer themselves? Who may look at your site and want to link back to you…
Write about personal experience too, the language of your comment can ultimately decide how well, or not, it is recieved by the audience. Too robot like and people will not feel the comment has been well thought of or is genuine at all. Write naturally.
Obviously it will be nice if you do get a link back for posting a comment on other websites, but lets face it, a majority of the time all you are gonna get is a no-follow, but these still add a bit of weight, ok they don’t pass PR as far Google is concerned but a no-follow link still appears on Yahoo! site explorer so I believe it must still be a little bit helpful. The main thing is that the more you are putting your voice out there the more it will get heard, as long as the comment is relevant then people will link back to you and your site. Take a look below at this comment which was posted about a post of mine, very complimentary and before I forget, THANK YOU to the person who posted it!

Getting a link back from writing something useful
There are more examples of when posting comments on other websites can help like appearing in the SERPs for a specific subject. I once did a post on Kieron Donaghue’s blog (here.org.uk) about Mothers Day Domains. Now when you Google “Mothers Day Domains, my domain appears in the description text on the results. Oh and in total 3 times one the first page I might add, see below:

Getting exposure for mothersdaycards.co.uk
So there we have it for the minute, I could spend all day writing about this subject. I have to say I am a big advocate of getting involved on other websites and getting online exposure using this method.
Another post about domain name seo done and dusted. I hope this has helped.
Until next time, cheerio!
