Directory submissions for your domain SEO
I have the labourious task today, and over the weekend, of doing manual directory submissions for one of our mobile sites. We have crafted a strategy to maximise our SEO efforts, so I thought I would share with you some of what we had in mind and maybe you to could replicate it for your domains.
I think I spoke about changing our meta data the other week and making sure that we had a common line across meta description, meta tags, keywords, alt and title attributes etc. Well here how having a clean plan of action in your meta will improve the effects of your directory submissions. The idea is not just to have a scatter gun approach but a definite line of fire which will not only improve your SEO but allow to take that next step to improving your online search rankings.
My first tranche of submissions will be some well known freebie sites which are well established and should be submitted too as a matter of principle rather than anything else to increase your online visibility and show the search engines you are serious about wanting your site to be ranked well. Remember SEO is about making your website or domains the authority in their area/niche. Without doing the simple basics you will fall drop very early on in the race. Here is the list of directories I will initially submit too:
- Dmoz
- Yahoo UK Directory
- FreeIndex
- Hotfrog
- Abigdir.com
- Littlewebdirectory.com
- Thew3bindex.com
- Turnpike.net/directory.html
- Roask.com
- Webworldindex.com
- Wikidweb.com
- Jayde.com
- Linkcentre.com
- Onemission.com/d.pl
- Vendora
- Google Maps
- Splut.com
On in particular I like in the UK is freeindex.co.uk, a simple business listing site where your listing improves the more times you have someone comment, positively, about your site. It tends to rank well in moe niche areas in UK search and refers traffic well.
DMOZ is my all time favourite, the original, still human edited directory where by a good listing in here can push your PR up by 1-2 notches. I managed to get 3AC.co.uk listed in the domains section of DMOZ quite quickly and they are now passing on a PR4 link, thats good stuff! Don’t forget many of the search engines especially Google take onboard alot the information DMOZ lists, so if you can get multiple listings then by all means submit away into more than category.
If we put this into perspective of making a simple minisite under one of your domain names, a handful of listings in high profile directories can make all the difference whether your domain name actually ranks at all for its own name. For example my geo domain www.thehamble.co.uk never used to rank for its own name, now I have knocked up a small minisite and submitted it to a few other sites and voila! first page for “The Hamble.” Not only that but for the keyphrase I want to rank for too… “accommodation in hamble.” A few submissions into the above directories should see this little domain ranking in the upper quartile in no time.
Anyway hope this adds a bit of value to your domains
Cheers
Gary
