3D Ready TV Domain Test

3d ready tvTrue Story: In December of 2008 I was lying in a hospital bed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. I had been there for almost two months after suffering from acute liver failure (not alcohol related I might add.) Now there’s not much you can do in a hospital 3 days before Christmas, but read and go on the internet, of which I was doing a lot…

However, 5 days previous to this I had been reading a press release in The Guardian announcing Sky’s plans to launch 3D Ready TV. Doing a little more reading I shortly found Sky’s original press release announcing their plans to launch their 3D TV package at some point in 2010. I immediately logged into 1and1.co.uk and started punching in the first terms that came into my mind, and after realising the shortest versions were already taken years before, I quickly found that 3dReadyTV.co.uk available. I registered it on 22nd December 2008 and put it in my diary to check out the 3D TV market in 2010.

This year has no doubt demonstrated that 3D TV will soon become a mainstream reality for many homes across the UK and now that it has begun to hit the high streets, search terms are increasing steadily. Not only is the lead up to Christmas a great time to start testing the water but with the recent changes made by Google with Instant and the “correction” of their keyword estimator tools, I thought it would be a good idea to do a live case study to:

  • a.) Demonstrate how staying on top of technology news for future potential domaining gains is a great long term investment idea
  • b.) Test how accurate Google’s keyword estimator tools really are in an evolving/growth market

Tonight I have begun creating a landing page for 3d Ready TV.co.uk which will be live tomorrow with the image above as the logo. It will be a simple price comparison site for the moment listing a handful of 3D TVs. I have added Google Analytics/Webmaster tools so I can track performance and we will see how things fair from there.

So what are the statistics today for “3D Ready TV”?

  • Google Beta Keyword Tool suggests 1,600 exact local UK searches per month
  • Google Legacy Keyword Tool suggests not enough data
  • Google Keyword Search Tool suggests 100 searches per month

Now these figures are well below what I would usually aim for when hand registering a domain name to develop, however we have to remember this is a new market and as such is largely based on speculation. Will these figures see dramatic increase over the coming years? I make an educated guess…

What’s it’s value / future potential?

Estibot.com suggests the domain name is worth about $420 dollars, I take this with a pinch of salt. What I know to be true is that currently 3D ready TVs are retailing around the £1,000-£1,500 mark which makes this a great product to market with potentially lucrative affiliate commissions. Results returned in Google are as follows:

3d ready tvs

OK so I am sharing this information when I could be secretly developing it behind closed doors but after presenting at the Think Visibility conference last Saturday I was made aware of a hunger in the industry for information and how, in reality, people are more inclined to share and share a like; genuinely want to help each other. My intention for this series of development posts is to prove a business model which I subscribe to, “time is money…” and when I say this I don’t mean making a quick buck, but instead the longer you are prepared to wait, the greater your ROI will be. The second will be to prove how accurate, or not, Google’s keyword tools are for a brand new domain name project in a growing market and whether they can be relied upon.

So here’s to 3D Ready TV and to it’s potential success, I hope you follow this little journey with me!

Best

Gary

    Hi Gary,

This is a great idea for a post. I will be keenly watching how this development goes for you.

I think 3D is going to be a massive new market but maybe not until 2012/2013, I don’t think consumers are quite ready having just invested in HD TVs. Naturally there will be the early adopters but as you say a longer period of time increases the ROI.

So far I have found Google’s keyword tool to be less than accurate so it would be good to see how this pans out for you in terms of accuracy because as far as I can tell there doesn’t seem to be any other research tools that can be used to assess the potential return of a keyword domain.

    All the best

    James

I agree with you there James about the assessment of the potential return of the domain. This is where market research and gut-feeling come into place. Sometimes more the gut-feeling than anything else! :-)

It’s not to say it will be a guaranteed money-maker but a calculated risk make this an ideal little venture to take advantage of for very little capital outlay. The only thing I need to spend on this is some of my time.

Google’s keyword tool is getting more accurate but is still only an indication. Testing niches / marketing like this allow you to understand exactly what the potential is. Trial and error!
